West Indies

West Indies is an island country situated in the American continent southeast of Mexico. This is popularly known as Caribbean because it is located in the Caribbean plate. It is a combo of more than 7000 islands and forms the island arcs. Cricket is an important and popular sport for them.

The name West Indies is derived from the phrase “West Indian”. This is because in 1492, when Columbus reached there, he mistook that he has reached India. The history also states that tribes from India have flown and settled down in West Indies during early 19th century.

Like most other countries in the world, West Indies was also held with colonialism. Initially it was Spaniards who were controlling the Caribbean. But later Britain was one main country which had a good hold of this area. Jamaica and Trinidad were brought into the wings of Britain on 1655 and 1802 respectively. After all struggles and agony, West Indies got independence on 6th August 1962.
